Forgotten Ways...
Long before gods were worshipped, religion served a higher purpose: to stabilize the delicate fabric of space-time, shielding countless dimensions from collapse. Temples and churches were built on sites where the fabric was weakest, where faith became a conduit for harmonizing electromagnetic energy. The collective focus of belief — not much more than chemical reactions in the brain — fortified the barrier between worlds, maintaining balance for eons.
But with the rise of space travel came a new golden age of science. Humanity left behind superstition, casting aside their ancient cosmic ties in their quest to explore the stars. The age of faith waned, held only by fanatics. As humanity ventured beyond their cradle, they learned they were not alone, discovering alien allies when a faster-than-light experiment went catastrophically wrong. Yet this discovery was shadowed by a darker truth: in abandoning faith, the fabric of space-time began to fray.
In the colonies, strange tears appeared, releasing a lethal force unlike any known plague. Whole planets disappeared, engulfed by an unstoppable blight. Medical science found the “plague” to be a strange cosmic radiation emanating from new sources across the galaxy. No cure could be found, and the radiation transformed its victims, altering DNA and reshaping them into hollowed shells. Their bodies, altered to expel noxious gases, tainted Earth’s atmosphere, rendering it deadly for native life.
From the ashes of chaos, humanity reeled, weakened but fighting to survive. Then came the demons — creatures from beyond, immune to the plague and organized. They corralled survivors, taking the immune, enslaving women, and harvesting children to fuel their arcane technology. Their foothold on Earth grew, fortified into a dark beachhead, as they prepared for a larger invasion.
With humanity fractured and the air itself becoming poison, the question echoes across what remains of civilization: how did it all begin?
